Facebook isn\u2019t just about connecting with friends: It\u2019s now (or soon to be) a workplace productivity tool, a video sharing and streaming platform, a place to shop, etc. Similar transformations can be seen across LinkedIn, Instagram, Pinterest and Snapchat, among other networks. Social media has become less a discrete thing that people do than a natural component of everything they do. And that trend shows no signs of slowing.<\/em><br \/>\n<em>\u00a0<\/em><br \/>\n<em><a href=\"https:\/\/lern.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/20161117_141322.jpg\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-9543\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-9543 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/lern.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/20161117_141322-300x169.jpg\" alt=\"20161117_141322\" width=\"318\" height=\"179\" \/><\/a><br \/>\n<\/em><br \/>\n&nbsp;<br \/>\n&nbsp;<br \/>\n&nbsp;<br \/>\n&nbsp;<br \/>\n<em>Susan Hurrell presenting to a packed room at the big LERN conference.<\/em><br \/>\n<em>\u00a0<\/em>The 8 new best digital marketing tips for lifelong learning programs this year are these actionable items:<br \/>\n1.\u00a0<strong>Get Friction Free &#8211; Lucky Orange.com<\/strong><br \/>\nOnce you get people to your site, make sure you know where the grit is in the gears.\u00a0 Use tools like Lucky Orange to <em>watch people visit your site <\/em>&#8211; fill out your registration forms &#8211; interact with your content.\u00a0 See what is making your potential customers run screaming into the night.\u00a0 You can watch live or watch a recording, and set triggers to alert you to certain page views &#8211; like your registration form, or shopping cart. \u00a0I can tell you that people experience your site very differently than you do \u2013 you\u2019ll be amazed.\u00a0 Cost starting at $10\/month for 25k page views<br \/>\n&nbsp;<br \/>\n2<strong>.<\/strong> <strong>Look Before You Leap \u2013 New Connect Points in Social Media<\/strong><br \/>\nHeard of <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Whisper_(app)\">Whisper<\/a> (30 million active monthly users) ? <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Kik_Messenger\">Kik<\/a>? <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Yik_Yak\">YikYak<\/a>?\u00a0\u00a0 <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Ello_(social_network)\">Ello<\/a>?\u00a0\u00a0 <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/WhatsApp\">Whatsapp<\/a>? <a href=\"https:\/\/www.yubl.me\/\">Yubi<\/a>? Lots of participants posted photos on the conference app.<br \/>\n&nbsp;<br \/>\n3<strong>.<\/strong> <strong>Follow Them Around the Web<\/strong><br \/>\nEver notice that sometimes you will visit a website and then you\u2019ll start seeing ads for that business everywhere you go? It\u2019s almost like they are following you around the web.\u00a0 They are! It\u2019s called Retargeting, and it allows you to have an ad or series of ads follow your website visitor as they browse the web, or based on their email address.\u00a0 Programs like Adroll allow you to set a budget, test your ad content, and stay top of mind.\u00a0 Great for courses because you can make the ad copy time sensitive to remind people that \u201cStretch out the Holiday Stress \u2013 Winter \u00a0Yoga Class Registration at Mycollege.edu ends Dec.1\u201d \u2013 ads with metrics that help you measure success \u2013 affordably.\u00a0 You set the budget.<br \/>\n4.<strong> Chat Program as Email Marketing Driver.\u00a0 User Instructions: <\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Download WhatsApp or other high adoption chat program (Facebook Messenger)<\/li>\n<li>Save &lt;this number&gt; in your contact list as &lt;newsletter name&gt;<\/li>\n<li>Send &lt;newsletter name&gt; a message on WhatsApp asking to be added to the newsletter (explicit consent)<\/li>\n<li>People who opt in with a phone number rather than an email and get the newsletter messages straight away as chats.<\/li>\n<li>Provider gears content appropriately.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<br \/>\n5<strong>.\u00a0<\/strong><strong>Ask the Question &#8211; AskNice.ly<\/strong><br \/>\nNet Promoter Scores give you a lot of insight with one simple question &#8211; and then you can drill down to find out WHY and WHERE you need to improve.\u00a0 Asking &#8220;Would you recommend &lt;classes from my program&gt; to a colleague doing professional development&#8221; (whatever) &#8211; and use an NPS service like AskNice.ly to aggregate results. Then Celebrate or Improve as needs be. $50\/month<br \/>\n&nbsp;<br \/>\n6<strong>.<\/strong> <strong>One Email that gets a 50-60% open rate &#8211; Believe it or Not.<\/strong><br \/>\nProperly executed, your first &#8220;welcome&#8221; email&#8221; from your email marketing program will have the highest open rate &#8211; and highest click through rate- but you have to say something more than &#8220;thanks for signing up.&#8221; In Serious Email Marketing, I talked about a dozen ways to maximize the power of the Welcome Email &#8211; but here are three: 1.\u00a0 include link to a PDF map that shows where available parking is for your campus, including bus\/train locations (make them welcome &amp; know where to go).\u00a0 2. Assuming your list is properly segmented, provide downloads of any forms, or supply lists, or\u00a0 recommended reading\/resources they may need, so they arrive at their first interaction fully prepared.\u00a0 3. A roundtable was held every hour of the conference in the Hall of Learning.<br \/>\n&nbsp;<br \/>\n7<strong>.<\/strong> <strong>Canva &#8211; Graphics GuruMaker\u00a0 Canva.com<\/strong><br \/>\nIf it doesn&#8217;t look good, people won&#8217;t notice. Canva is a tool for the graphically designed challenged that allows you to use your own or stock images, overlay text, and create properly sized graphics for social media.\u00a0 There are other tools out there, but Canva, for me wins this one hands down. \u00a0Free basic account, Paid accounts starting at $9\/month.\u00a0 Some may qualify for edu discounts (specific criteria).<br \/>\n&nbsp;<br \/>\n<strong>8. Lights! Camera! Audio!
