{"id":17881,"date":"2014-02-13T17:58:36","date_gmt":"2014-02-13T17:58:36","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/lern.org\/?p=1307"},"modified":"2021-08-02T12:22:08","modified_gmt":"2021-08-02T17:22:08","slug":"is-gen-y-ready","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/lern.com\/lerntest\/is-gen-y-ready\/","title":{"rendered":"Is Gen Y ready?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Is Gen Y a market for professional development, or is it too early in their work life?\u00a0 That question was discussed at the <a href=\"https:\/\/lern.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/geny.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-1308\" src=\"https:\/\/lern.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/geny-242x300.jpg\" alt=\"geny\" width=\"242\" height=\"300\" \/><\/a>Senior LERN Leader Retreat in Tucson this spring.<br \/>\nSusan Davis, a Gen Yer attending the retreat reported, \u201c In preparation for this event, I spoke with some friends and colleagues on their personal interest in continuing education and professional development.<br \/>\n\u201cSome were interested and took advantage of opportunities offered through their employers. However, those who were not interested agreed that they would be willing to invest their <i>time<\/i> once they are in a career they enjoy and intend to stick with.<br \/>\n\u201cEven then, they would be hesitant to spend their own money.\u201d<br \/>\nDavis is Senior Coordinator, Online Learning Development for the American Society of Civil Engineers in Reston, Virginia. She is also Chair of the LERN Future Leaders Council.<br \/>\nGen Y has invested heavily in college degrees and career training.\u00a0 The feeling in the field is that programs have generally been successful in attracting Gen Y to continuing education opportunities.\u00a0 But a number of programs report they are not getting Gen Y in professional development courses.\u00a0 So it appears there is still a question about whether Gen Y is 1) in a long term career where professional development will pay off; and 2) able to pay for continuing education or will need to rely on employers for professional development and training.<br \/>\n<div id=\"attachment_1309\" style=\"width: 727px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/lern.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/genyjulie.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1309\" class=\" wp-image-1309 \" src=\"https:\/\/lern.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/genyjulie-1024x756.jpg\" alt=\"Generational expert Julie Coates, left, with Susan Davis of the American Society of Civil Engineers.
