{"id":17893,"date":"2014-06-11T19:53:09","date_gmt":"2014-06-11T19:53:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/lern.org\/?p=1450"},"modified":"2021-08-02T12:23:34","modified_gmt":"2021-08-02T17:23:34","slug":"pioneer-lifelong-learning-program-closes","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/lern.com\/lerntest\/pioneer-lifelong-learning-program-closes\/","title":{"rendered":"Pioneer Lifelong Learning Program Closes"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"attachment_1451\" style=\"width: 188px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/lern.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/06\/learning.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1451\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-1451\" alt=\"The brochure cover shown is the last brochure of the Learning Connection. \" src=\"https:\/\/lern.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/06\/learning-178x300.jpg\" width=\"178\" height=\"300\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-1451\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The brochure cover shown is the last brochure of the Learning Connection.<\/p><\/div>\nThe Learning Connection of Providence, Rhode Island, has closed after a storied 33 year history.\u00a0 A pioneering program in lifelong learning, the field adopted many of the Learning Connection\u2019s innovations in brochures, course analysis, and software.<br \/>\nAmong its contributions:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Cutting the brochure production timeline<\/li>\n<li>Producing six brochures a year<\/li>\n<li>Tracking brochure distribution by carrier route rather than zip codes.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>It also was the originator of the online registration and business system that became Lumens, now used by hundreds of lifelong learning programs.<br \/>\nDuring its four decades, the Learning Connection was the largest lifelong learning program in Rhode Island.\u00a0 It was founded by Greg Marsello, a co-founder of LERN.\u00a0 Other staff members included Kathy Brady, Brendan Marsello, and Roy Singleton.<br \/>\nThe program produced 193 catalogs, had 1,500 teachers, offered 3,000 courses and served over 25,000 people.<br \/>\nThe Learning Connection was also one of the last free universities in the nation.\u00a0 Free universities started in the 1960s.\u00a0 Their educational philosophy that \u201cAnyone can teach, anyone can learn\u201d was widely regarded by traditional institutions and media as educational heresy at the time.\u00a0 The philosophy and free university model then was adopted by every lifelong learning and continuing education program throughout North America, including your program.<br \/>\nThe free university business model consisted of diverse subjects taught by people in the community and promoted with regular and colorful brochures.\u00a0 The word \u201cfree\u201d meant free to learn and free to teach, not no-cost.
