Engagement New Rage

EngagementSuddenly in the last few months, the practice of engaging learners more in the learning experience has blossomed.
The new learning format is now being seen in all formats, from in-person events and classes to online activities and even webinars.  This moves active or engaged learning to the forefront of lifelong learning programs for the foreseeable future.Clearly, this is a new phase in pushing teaching “from the sage on the stage to the guide on the side,” the long hoped-for transformation of learning and teaching for this century.
Clearly, this is a new phase in pushing teaching “from the sage on the stage to the guide on the side,” the long hoped-for transformation of learning and teaching for this century. Engaging learners is now being piloted, explored and implemented in all phases of the classroom experience, including creating and delivering content, interaction and learner discussion, and even involving students in assessment.

For kids classes, Michele Tiller, a  K-12 teacher in Hollister, CA, has pairs of students walk around the playground and while walking review material for a quiz.
Some best practices are being formed.  For example, many say groups of 4-5 learners appear to be the best size for groups doing active or engaged group work.LERN will premiere an “Engaged Learning” session format at the LERN annual conference in Portland November 15-18, 2017 with four concurrent sessions presented in the new format.
